The Aging for Life action team’s program created for those “nearly or newly” retired to design their retirement life plans was completed last month. At the final class, the five participants shared their personal lifestyle outlines formed by evidence-based learnings, self-examination through skills and interests assessments, and discussions with regional organizations regarding volunteering opportunities.
The action team will now complete a series of evaluations to measure participant feedback, but even informal testimonials were awe-inspiring. One participant reported they had already lost 20 lbs. thanks to trying out an eating philosophy practice outlined in the curriculum.
Program Coordinator Gigi Amateau said, “What a privilege to learn and grow alongside these amazing folks! Their willingness to share and openness to try new things made the class an awesome experience. We are truly blessed with an amazing corps of community partners who pitched in to make this a success.”
The Aging for Life Program is the product of the action team’s thorough research, and the curriculum, designed by VCU Department of Gerontology, covers theories on elderhood and key factors that contribute to healthy living. The participants complete mid-point and post course evaluations that will inform the course’s refinement for future sessions. Organizers will keep in touch with participants to learn about their progress.
