Powhatan County Community Discussion Group: Senior Connections Four Year Plan for Aging Services

Powhatan County is a beautiful, rural county 25 miles west of Richmond.  The Village is the activity hub in the County, and you’ll find restaurants, County Administration and other County services, as well as the prettiest Library in Central Virginia, which offers multi-generational programs, as does the YMCA.  County residents are friendly and the crime rate is low.

Several agencies offer services for seniors—Parks and Recreation, the Library, and the Sheriff’s Department.  There are various activities planned for Senior Citizens including the Friendship Café, which meets at St. John Newman Catholic Church, and Senior Triad, which meets twice a year.  The County has a well-established and busy Free Clinic which serves over 1,000 of Powhatan’s Citizens.

Affordable housing is hard to find and transportation is  marginal, but there is a transportation program for the elderly and disabled in development.    While many older adults may lack the skills to access services, Social Services can help with referrals, and the Library has public-access computers.  The County also has a Resource Council that works to identify resources and make county residents aware of them.

Community partners and the Department of Social Services work together to keep people safe through emergency assistance programs such as Energy Share and Community Action.
