The Age Wave Scholars program joins students and community partners to design, develop and implement projects in the region and beyond. Students achieve learning goals while partners benefit from their skills and gerontological expertise.

Completed Projects
Raleigh Priddy, Age Wave Community Planning Scholar, is collaborating with Homeward and Age Wave in developing a regional Taskforce to connect homeless service systems with the aging services network. The project will identify senior housing resources, pathways, and prevention strategies to synthesize solutions for older adults experiencing or at-risk of homelessness.

Nicole Hunt, Age Wave Seniors Wish Advocate Scholar, is working with older adults living in nursing facilities acknowledge, identify, and carryout dreams and wishes they have either forgotten about, or put on hold due to physical limitations, financial challenges, and/or transportation issues. The goal of the program is to help residents realize that life does not have to end because you’re in a nursing facility. One can still dream and live out those dreams even in longterm care.

An Age Wave Scholar team, Age Wave Scholars for the City of Richmond Office of Aging and Persons with Disabilities, is working with Councilwoman Ellen Robertson and Yvette Jones, Manager for the Office on Aging and Persons with Disabilities. Defining and implementing components of a strategy for a Naturally Occuring Retirement Community (NORC) in the 6th district. Click here to view the May 11 update
Annie Rhodes, Age Wave City Council Scholar, has been working with Richmond City Councilwoman Cynthia Newbille on budget planning related to aging in place and medical/wellness issues for seniors, as well as thought leadership on policy and practices. ​

Sara Morris, Age Wave Transportation Liaison Scholar, completed a research project about transportation needs and opportunities in our region. She surveyed individuals and helped Age Wave develop a transportation policy agenda and advocacy platform. She's an integral part of Neighborhood Livability’s advocacy planning. ​

Emily Daidone, Age Wave Community Advocate Scholar, utilized her gerontological expertise to develop evaluations, criteria and reports on the topic of social isolation by identifying locations that government/advocates identify as places that would benefit from analysis. Emily's work emphasized transportation and advocacy opportunities. ​

Audra Backaitis, Age Wave Research Scholar, is using evidence-based gerontological research to create a white paper that will offer best practices for families having conversations about downsizing. Audra is working with Legacy Navigator to turn these findings into a guide.
Alexa Mary Van Aartrijk, Age Wave Grant Writing Scholar, submitted a grant to share the story behind the Social Isolation Risk Index research. She wrote about the effects on community partners and their attitudes toward isolation, the community education provided, the collaboration with VCU Gerontology's service learning projects, and so much more.
